Boeing - $75.00
The Boeing Everett site is located at Paine Field, approximately 30 miles north of downtown Seattle. It is heralded as having the largest manufacturing building in the world, producing the 747, 767, 777, and the 787 airplanes. Approximately 30,000 aerospace employees in Everett support aircraft fabrication and production, product development, aviation safety and security and airplane certifications. Other production areas at the site include the paint hangars, flight line and delivery center. Originally built in 1967 to manufacture the 747, the main assembly building has grown to enclose 472 million cubic feet of space over 98.3 acres. During this tour, visitors will observe some of the ergonomics challenges of building aircraft and some of the ways in which ergonomics and safety have been incorporated into Boeing’s build process. The tour will end with a tour of the new Ergonomics and Safety DoJo (Japanese term for “training center” that houses a library of equipment and assistive devices.)
In January 1967, the first production workers arrived at Everett, and on May 1, 1967, the major assembly buildings opened their doors for the first time. Thousands of people from all over the world visit the Everett site every year. VIP visitors have included U.S. presidents, international dignitaries, CEOs, astronauts and other celebrities. More than 40 years later, Everett employees are making history again as they manufacture the company's newest twin-aisle airplanes, the 787 Dreamliner and the 747-8. Development of the popular 777X is also based in Everett.
All non-Boeing visitors must provide government-issued photo ID. No photography, camera phones or other recording devices permitted. Expect long distance walking. Generally a good/comfortable pair of tennis shoes or boots are sufficient. Required features include: covered toes, heels and top of foot; sturdy material that resists abrasion; heels less than 2 inches high with heel base greater than 1 inch square; no ballet slippers / soles at least ¼ inch thick and slip resistant. No exposed coil/string soles, individually toed shoes or rocker bottom (i.e. ShapeUps). Notify tour coordinator for mobility-related concerns. All Boeing sites are tobacco free workplaces.
